Reviving the Past
Inspired by a creative prompt in a video editing class, my classmate Christy Hartner and I collaborated to create "Joshumentary," a documentary exploring the history of artistic sampling through the lens of vaporwave. This genre leverages vintage internet assets to craft contemporary mixed-media compositions. The documentary is narrated by Josh, a whimsical computer/television entity, who guides viewers through the process of repurposing old archived internet footage and media into new artistic creations.
In the spirit of the vaporwave movement, much of the footage used in "Joshumentary" consists of repurposed old clips and archived internet ephemera. The documentary was showcased at the "Larry & Friends Film Festival" hosted by Lawrence Tech, where it won first prize for its inventiveness and quality. This project not only highlights the creative potential of using forgotten digital artifacts but also underscores the importance of reimagining the past in new and innovative ways.
